What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion refers to a whole class of devices that remove a very superficial portion of the skin through a number of different methods and techniques. Some microdermabrasion treatments involve paddles or crystals that are passed along the surface of the skin with a suction wand that removes the dead skin layer. Other treatment methods include the use creams with abrasive particulates that are rubbed onto the skin. The most common types of professional microdermabrasion treatments are crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion.
Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the traditional treatment of choice. They rely on tiny crystals that are blasted onto the skin to perform the exfoliating process. Although the crystal microdermabrasion system is popular, other alternatives such as the diamond microdermabrasion have been introduced. Diamond microdermabrasion systems operate without the need for crystals. The exfoliation process occurs when diamond tipped head makes contact with the skin and rubs against it. In both crystals and diamond microdermabrasion systems the dead skin cells are sucked away.
Who Can Benefit From Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion helps improve and reduce fine lines, age spots and other superficial skin problems. The treatment is also helpful with oily and enlarged pores, blackheads and some acne and surgical scars. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal and works best when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin.
Microdermabrasion has been found to stimulate the creation of collagen and cell turnover. Following a microdermabrasion treatment, the skin will feel smoother and have improved texture.
Does Microdermabrasion Hurt?
The procedure is virtually painless and requires no anaesthetic solutions. Microdermabrasion treatments may be combined with other techniques such as a chemical peel in an attempt to get greater results.
How A Chemical Peel Can Help Your Skin Become Soft And Smooth Again
When expertly done, a chemical peel containing alpha hydroxy acid can remove the top layer of skin that has been damaged due to overexposure to the sun, aging and other causes. When this damaged skin is removed by a chemical peel, it will help stimulate the growth of healthy, fresh skin cells. In addition to its cosmetic advantage of helping you appear younger, it can also eliminate pre-cancerous cells from further developing and spreading to other parts of your body.
Can I Choose Which Type Of Peel I Get?
We will discuss the options available to treat you skin problem, be it acne or pre-cancerous growths. The three degrees of chemical peels available are light, medium or deep. A light peel is the mildest and it works best to remove or reduce acne, rough or dry skin, uneven pigmentation, fine wrinkles and minimal damage due to overexposure to the sun. A medium chemical peel works better on removing stubborn acne, discoloration and can correct fine wrinkles. A deep chemical peel is usually reserved for severely damaged skin, deep wrinkles and pre-cancerous growths on the skin. A deep chemical peel is usually not recommended unless the skin problem is severe or there are pre-cancerous cells present on the skin.
Will A Chemical Peel Treatment Hurt?
A chemical peel is one of the least invasive procedures available to help restore skin to a soft and smooth condition. Because it is a non-surgical procedure, most people experience very little or no pain. Recovery time is also minimal.
While a light chemical peel may temporarily cause some minor irritation and redness but it will not last for long. Patients who receive a medium or deep chemical peel treatment are advised to stay out of the sun for several months. Some patients may also notice that their skin is permanently lighter, darker or unable to tan.
